34 years ago today, Hurricane Andrew Made Landfall
Today is the anniversary of one of the defining moments in Homestead's history. On August 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew made landfall near Homestead as a Category 5 storm with winds reaching 165 mph, one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the United States. The storm damaged or destroyed more than 730,000 homes and buildings across South Florida, left over a million people without power, and caused an estimated $25 billion in damage, then the costliest disaster in state history.
Homestead Senior High School itself was severely damaged, delaying the start of that school year by two weeks, and much of the surrounding community was forced to rebuild from the ground up. Every hurricane season since has been shaped by the lessons Andrew left behind, from stricter building codes to how seriously South Florida takes storm preparation today.

Homestead's new mobile spay and neuter clinic opens tomorrow at Harris Field Park
Tomorrow’s opening is more than just another ribbon cutting. Homestead pet owners will soon have another option for important preventive care closer to home with the new mobile spay and neuter clinic at Harris Field Park.
Spaying and neutering can help prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of homeless animals that eventually end up in local shelters or depend on already-busy rescue organizations. Making those services easier to access locally can make a real difference for both pet owners and the wider community.
The clinic also comes as South Dade puts more attention on expanding animal services closer to home. For residents who have had to travel farther for certain services, adding another local resource is a welcome step toward making routine pet care more convenient and accessible.
