Winter Wonderland Ice Skating Set to Return to Downtown Homestead

Ice skating in South Florida? Downtown Homestead is preparing for exactly that. Winter Wonderland is expected to bring a full outdoor ice rink to Losner Park, with a seasonal run reported for November 21 through January 10. It is a chance for local families to enjoy a winter activity without leaving South Dade.
The rink has been reported by the South Dade News Leader, but ticket prices, hours and reservation details should be confirmed with the organizers before planning a visit. Mark the opening date on your calendar and watch for official event information as it becomes available.

A 10-Question Quiz Can Earn You a Free Compost Bin
Miami-Dade households can learn the basics of backyard composting on demand and turn that lesson into a useful freebie. Watch the county workshop, take the 10-question quiz and score at least 70% to receive a voucher for a free compost bin while supplies last.
The program is for Miami-Dade residents and is limited to one bin per household. The county provides pickup instructions after the program, so this is an online first step rather than a reason to drive somewhere today.
Homestead Nonprofit Plans 100 Affordable Homes as Housing Costs Rise

A Homestead nonprofit wants to turn unused land into much-needed affordable housing. According to NBC 6 South Florida, Touching Miami with Love is working on a five-story development with 100 affordable housing units behind its existing facility. The proposed project is estimated at $53 million.
The proposal responds to the pressure rising housing costs place on local families. It is still a plan, not a completed development or an announcement that applications are open. Residents interested in future eligibility and timelines should watch for confirmed updates from the nonprofit and local officials.

Miami-Dade Transit Fares Are Going Up in January
If you depend on Metrobus or Metrorail to get around South Dade, there's a fare increase coming. Miami-Dade County plans to raise the standard fare from $2.25 to $2.75 beginning in January 2027. That's an additional 50 cents per ride, or roughly $5 more per five-day workweek for someone making two paid trips daily.
The county also preserved service on 13 bus routes previously considered for cuts. Before the new rates take effect, check whether you qualify for discounted fares and review your commuting budget.
