Naranja's 328-Home Plan Is Now Listed Approved, but Construction Has Not Started

South Dade families tracking affordable housing can now see that Lakeview at Naranja has moved beyond its earlier developer-selection stage, although construction has not started. The eight-story plan calls for 328 apartments reserved for households earning 30% to 80% of area median income for 99 years. It also includes 11,466 square feet of commercial space, lakefront and pedestrian improvements, and construction phases of 203 and 125 homes. One project update lists the plan as approved, while the underlying county resolution is still labeled “In Draft.” That mismatch is why 2031 should be treated as a planning estimate, not a move-in promise. The proposed site is at 27501 and 27525 S. Dixie Highway. No leasing list, application window or construction start has been published, so do not pay anyone claiming to reserve a unit; wait for official instructions from Housing Trust Group or the Naranja Lakes CRA.

Hundreds of Roosters Found in Redland Animal-Fighting Investigation

A search for suspected environmental violations on a Redland property turned into an animal-fighting investigation after Miami-Dade deputies reported finding hundreds of roosters, training rings and a large arena near Southwest 309th Street. Two men were arrested Tuesday and face charges that include animal fighting and cruelty. Investigators said some birds showed injuries consistent with possible fighting, while the property owner denied that fights were taking place there. The case has drawn coverage from several South Florida news stations and raises fresh questions about animal welfare and activity on rural properties in our area. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Tomato Season Is Open, but Start With the Right Size Plant

Patio and backyard gardeners can start tomatoes now: UF/IFAS lists South Florida's tomato window from August through February, and October's calendar includes tomatoes among the easy crops to plant. Buy a healthy transplant with a sturdy stem rather than a tall, root-bound bargain, give it at least a five-gallon container or open bed, add support at planting and water the soil instead of soaking leaves. Starting now gives plants time to flower in cooler nights while avoiding the worst summer heat. Cherry and other small-fruited types are often more forgiving in tight spaces. Place one plant in six or more hours of sun, keep moisture even and inspect leaf undersides twice a week.
