Everglades Guides Should Check the Permit Status Before Paying

Local guides and tour operators should pause before paying because Everglades National Park’s permit page contradicts itself. The page says 2027 applications are accepted from Oct 15, 2026 through Dec 31, 2026, then labels the current status “CLOSED.” A completed Commercial Use Authorization carries a $350 application fee, plus a $1,000 two-year management fee due later. The permit can cover fishing, paddling, hiking, photography and other paid visitor services, depending on the activity. The park also warns that choosing the wrong authorization can mean denial and another application fee. That makes a quick confirmation worth more than guessing. Call the CUA office at 305-242-7744 before submitting payment or documents. A five-minute status check could prevent a local operator from risking a nonrefundable fee or delaying 2027 bookings. Guides can use the waiting time to gather insurance, operating-plan, license and first-aid documents.
Review the requirements, then confirm the live application status with the CUA office.

Homestead’s October Council Meeting Is Next Wednesday

If you had City Hall on tonight’s calendar, take it off. Homestead’s live calendar now places the City Council meeting on Oct 28, 2026 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers. The previously published annual schedule listed today and warned that dates were subject to change. The current calendar also places a short CRA Board meeting immediately before it at 5:15 p.m. This is the kind of small date change that can waste an evening when an older PDF is still circulating. The practical move is to rely on the live calendar and check it again the day you plan to attend. Residents following development, utilities, roads or neighborhood issues need the right night before arranging transportation or child care.
Bookmark the live city calendar and recheck the meeting entry next Wednesday.
⏰ Time: 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m.

South Dade Families Can Get a Free Care Coordinator

Families do not have to untangle school, health and home pressures alone. Community Health of South Florida’s Service Partnership is free for children through age 18, or through 22 for a young person with a disability. The program serves Homestead, Florida City, Goulds, Richmond Heights and West Perrine. A care coordinator can help with school attendance, health insurance, family involvement, youth-violence concerns and other barriers. Support can include one-on-one case management and in-home assessment. That makes it a useful first call when a family’s needs cross several agencies and no single office seems to own the whole problem. One coordinator can reduce the number of disconnected calls a parent has to make.
Review eligibility and request a referral through CHI; the program page lists Tiaundra Bell at 786-245-2737.
Sake Thai by KAE Solves the Mixed-Cravings Dinner Problem

When one person wants sushi and someone else wants curry, this Homestead menu keeps the group at one table. Sake Thai & Sushi by KAE lists sushi rolls, Thai curries, ramen, boba and vegan choices from one kitchen. The direct Toast menu shows staples such as Panang curry and Thai iced tea beside specialty rolls. That range works for families, work lunches and groups with different comfort zones. Prices and availability can change, so check the live menu before promising a dish. A broad local menu makes group ordering easier without defaulting to a chain. Try one familiar plate and one specialty roll to split, then note which heat level works for the table.
Browse the direct menu and order from the restaurant’s own page.

Last Chance Is the Old-School US-1 Stop Before the Keys

Some nights call for a polished cocktail room; others call for a jukebox, a pool table and zero pretense. Last Chance Bar & Package sits on South Dixie Highway near the Florida City edge. Recent customer listings mention pool tables, a jukebox, food-truck service and a long Wednesday window. Third-party hours and entertainment can change, so call before going. Bring ID and set a sober-ride plan; earlier is usually quieter. South Dade nightlife is not only downtown events; longstanding neighborhood bars are part of the local map too.
Check the latest hours before heading south on US-1.

Pick the Plant for the Spot Before You Buy It

The cheapest plant is the one you do not have to replace. UF/IFAS Miami-Dade’s low-maintenance guide covers more than 350 plants selected for South Florida conditions, including poor alkaline sand and limestone soils. The list lets gardeners compare light, salt tolerance, mature size and other traits before a nursery run. It includes native and non-native options, so the point is matching the right plant to the right place, not buying by label alone. New plants still need a real establishment period: small containers may take months, while larger trees can need much longer. Start with the sun, drainage and final width of the planting spot, then make the shopping list. Better matching means less replacement cost, less water and fewer plants fighting the house or sidewalk later.
Open the UF/IFAS list on your phone and shortlist three plants before visiting a South Dade nursery.
