Cutler Bay golf fundraiser directs more than $16,000 to community programs

The Town of Cutler Bay says its charity golf tournament at Redland Golf & Country Club raised more than $16,000 for the Cutler Bay Community Fund; an independent local follow-up reported $16,660. The fund supports programs and nonprofit work in education, the environment, culture, beautification and social services. Residents and local organizations can follow the town's Community Fund information for future awards and ways to support it; this is a positive result, not a current grant application notice.

Hidden Gem: Long Pine Key Trails

Everglades National Park’s Long Pine Key network offers more than 22 miles of connected trails through pine rockland, one of South Florida’s rarest ecosystems. The main Long Pine Key Trail runs roughly seven miles west from the campground area toward Pine Glades Lake.

Why go: It is a quieter way to see open pine forest, birds and seasonal changes beyond the park’s better-known roadside stops.

Know before you go: The trail is open but unmaintained, with rocky ground and vegetation that can make travel slow. Bicycles are allowed, but the route is not wheelchair accessible. Carry water, sun and insect protection, and turn around before heat or daylight becomes a problem.

Access: Enter through the Homestead entrance. Standard park entrance fees apply unless you have a valid pass.
