Homestead High Is Turning Hands-On Classes Into Career Paths

Homestead Senior High students who learn best by doing now have several practical routes toward a trade, credential, apprenticeship or first paid job. Beginning construction students are learning tool safety and using bandsaws, while advanced students move into carpentry, plumbing, electronics and masonry; the program is also building a small house, arranging jobsite visits and pointing students toward certifications and apprenticeships. A cosmetology club launching in November will give 11th- and 12th-graders 14 after-school sessions through May, with materials supplied. Students who attend at least six sessions can build a portfolio, earn a BARBICIDE infection-control credential and explore paid internships. Theater students are preparing short works for December, a larger spring play and a visit to the Seminole Theatre. Families should ask the school now about eligibility, available space and sign-up deadlines, and interested students should speak with a counselor or program teacher before the cosmetology launch.

A Young Bald Eagle Is Flying Free Again in South Dade

A juvenile bald eagle found grounded in a mangrove this spring is back in the sky. The young bird was too small to fly when rescuers found it in April, and its nest could not be located, so wildlife rehabilitators treated it and prepared it for release over several months. On Oct. 8, county and wildlife teams returned the eagle to wetlands in southwest Miami-Dade, offering residents a rare good-news look at what coordinated rescue work can accomplish and a reminder that South Dade’s mangroves, wetlands and open spaces remain active wildlife habitat. The successful release protected a federally safeguarded raptor and shows why quick reporting matters: anyone who finds a large bird injured or grounded should give it space, keep pets back and contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or local authorities instead of trying to handle it.

A Race-Weekend Shift Can Put $850 or More Into a Local Nonprofit

A school club, church, booster group or nonprofit can turn November race weekend into a practical fundraiser without selling products or making another donation appeal. Homestead-Miami Speedway is recruiting groups for Nov. 6–8 roles that include ticket taking, tram support, venue guidance, ADA assistance and information service. Groups must provide at least 10 people for a shift; admission-crew volunteers can be 16 or older, while other assignments require adults. The listed contribution is $85 per person per day, rising to $90 when the full committed group reports, so a minimum 10-person group can generate at least $850 for one day, with compensated training included. The speedway says it donated more than $50,000 to participating nonprofits in the past year. Groups with reliable volunteers should use the official page to confirm eligibility, request available assignments and lock in staffing before the roster fills.

⏰ Date: Friday–Sunday, Nov. 6–8
📍 Location: Homestead-Miami Speedway, One Ralph Sanchez Speedway Blvd., Homestead
