That $225 mistake can happen fast when a school bus stops on a busy South Dade road. Newly released records show Miami-Dade's restarted stop-arm camera program issued 7,902 citations between May 18 and the last day of school on June 4, representing nearly $1.8 million in notices, and the total topped $2.2 million through July 15. The county's hottest recorded block was near South Allapattah Road and SW 211th Street by Southland Mall, where cameras cited 201 drivers. For the daily commute, the useful rule is simpler than the ticket data: traffic in both directions must stop on two-lane roads and on multi-lane roads that are paved across. Opposing traffic is exempt only when the road has a raised median, a physical barrier or at least five feet of unpaved separation, while drivers traveling behind the bus must always stop.
If a notice arrives, use the citation number and plate exactly as printed to review the evidence and follow the payment or hearing instructions rather than ignoring it. The practical move Thursday is to slow down around school traffic, leave enough room to stop before the arm opens and remember that a painted center lane is not a protective median.
