Miami-Dade Voters Will Decide on School Funding Renewal This November

Miami-Dade voters will see a school funding question on the ballot this fall. On Tuesday, November 3, voters will decide whether to renew the districtโ€™s existing 1-mill property tax levy for another four years. The money would continue supporting teacher and instructional staff compensation along with school safety and security programs across Miami-Dade public schools, including schools serving Homestead, Florida City and the rest of South Dade. The current levy is set to expire in June 2027, so this vote will determine whether that funding continues beyond then.

Up to $150,000 in Homebuyer Help Is Available in Miami-Dade

If buying a home has felt out of reach, Miami-Dade County has a program worth checking out. The Welcome H.O.M.E. initiative is accepting applications from qualifying residents, with selected buyers potentially receiving up to $150,000 in homebuyer assistance. Households earning up to 140% of the Area Median Income may qualify, but the window is limited. The county will accept applications through September 30 or until 200 qualified applications are received, whichever comes first. Those applicants will then enter a public lottery for three newly constructed homes.

Gas Prices Are Climbing Again Across South Florida

If your last fill-up felt a little more expensive, you were not imagining it. Gas prices have been moving higher across South Florida, with the Miami-area average for regular gas sitting around $4.27 a gallon this weekend. Floridaโ€™s statewide average is also above $4.30, which means South Dade drivers spending plenty of time on US-1, Krome Avenue and the Turnpike are feeling the increase pretty quickly. For families already juggling grocery bills, school costs and long commutes, even a small jump at the pump adds up.

Deadly Turnpike Crash Puts Roadside Safety Back in Focus

A man was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck while standing outside a vehicle stopped on the emergency shoulder of Floridaโ€™s Turnpike near SW 216th Street. Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened shortly before 5 a.m. and forced southbound lanes to close for several hours during the investigation. For anyone who regularly drives between Homestead and Miami, it is a sobering reminder of how dangerous it can be to stand outside a disabled vehicle along a busy highway.
