Homestead Is Planning for More Wastewater Capacity as the City Grows
The City Council adopted a Wastewater Facilities Plan for expanding Homestead's wastewater treatment facility, prepared by engineering firm AECOM, as part of a broader push to increase treatment capacity, improve reliability, and reduce the city's reliance on Miami-Dade County's system for excess flow. The current facility relies on aging equipment that's increasingly strained as the city's population keeps climbing, and the plan is a required step toward securing state funding through Florida's Clean Water program. It's unglamorous infrastructure work, but it's the kind of project that determines whether Homestead can keep issuing new building permits without straining its sewer system past capacity.

Krome Avenue Utility Work Is Moving Toward an October Milestone
If Krome Avenue has been slowing down your drive lately, the underground work is part of a much larger upgrade. Crews are replacing and expanding water and sewer infrastructure between Lucy Street and the Miami-Dade Busway, with the major installation along this stretch currently targeted for substantial completion around the end of October. Drivers should continue to expect lane shifts, construction vehicles and occasional delays, although northbound and southbound traffic is intended to remain open. The work eventually moves into additional sections of Krome and Flagler, so this is one project South Dade drivers will continue hearing about.

South Dade Volunteers Are Cleaning Up the Coast Today
Today, September 19, 2026, International Coastal Cleanup Day is bringing volunteers to shorelines across Miami-Dade, including Black Point Marina, to remove litter before it reaches Biscayne Bay and nearby waterways. The Black Point cleanup is currently listed as sold out, but more than 70 cleanup locations are participating across the county, so there may still be another spot where you can join in. If you are heading to a cleanup, bring water in a reusable bottle, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Gloves, garbage bags, and insect repellent will be provided.
