Today is the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and Homestead Air Reserve Base, home to the 482nd Fighter Wing, holds its own memorial ceremony each year to mark the day, lowering the flag to half-staff in remembrance. For a base that houses fighter aircraft on continuous alert readiness, September 11 carries particular weight, it's part of why bases like Homestead's exist in their current form. Nationally, this year's anniversary is drawing expanded programming given the milestone, including a national broadcast tribute this evening. Locally, it's simply a day worth pausing for, whatever that looks like for you, a moment of silence, a flag at half-staff, or just remembering where you were.

Homestead residents will get a closer look at what’s ahead for the city when Mayor Steven D. Losner delivers the 2026 State of the City: Homestead Forward on Tuesday, September 29 at Homestead City Hall. The city says the evening will highlight current projects, initiatives already underway and plans for Homestead’s future, followed by a reception with city leadership and community partners. The City of Homestead is moving forward with another piece of its water infrastructure, with contractor procurement underway for Homestead Water Supply No. 7 and a pre-bid meeting scheduled for September 15. It’s not the kind of project most residents will notice day to day, but infrastructure like this becomes increasingly important as Homestead continues adding homes, businesses and residents. The redevelopment of Homestead Gardens is turning the former 150-unit public housing community into a 350-unit mixed-income development. Phase I includes 162 homes across four three- and four-story buildings, along with green space, a community garden, gym, community kitchen and resident lounge, and the developer lists September 2026 as the expected completion period.
