Over 1,300 Homestead Households Lost Power This Summer for Unpaid Bills

Homestead Public Services disconnected more than 1,300 customer accounts for nonpayment between March and mid-August this year, according to data from Assistant City Manager Crystal Ollivierre. The crackdown landed during one of the hottest summers on record: Miami-Dade saw 37 heat advisories this summer, more than triple last year's 12, and the National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning on August 19 when the heat index hit 112 degrees, the hottest August day ever recorded in Homestead. Florida is one of 25 states with no legal protection against power shutoffs during extreme heat. If you're behind on a bill and worried about disconnection, it's worth contacting Homestead Public Services directly before a missed payment turns into a shutoff, payment plans and assistance programs are often available if you reach out early.

Farm Share is marking its 35th anniversary this year, having grown from its Homestead roots in 1991 into Florida's largest independent food bank, distributing billions of pounds of fresh food statewide through nearly 2,000 partner agencies, food pantries, soup kitchens, churches, and senior centers. The organization also played a major role in emergency food relief after Hurricanes Milton and Helene. For an operation now serving the entire state, it's worth remembering the whole thing started in this city, and it's still headquartered here today.
