Tripadvisor reports Yardie Spice, a small, husband-and-wife-run restaurant on South Krome Avenue, currently sits at #1 out of more than 230 restaurants in Homestead. Owner JP is Haitian, his wife is Jamaican, and together they've spent nearly three decades in the food and beverage business, running Yardie Spice for close to 13 years now. The kitchen serves authentic Jamaican and Haitian dishes, jerk chicken, curry goat, oxtail, conch fritters, made entirely from scratch with, as the couple proudly puts it, no microwave in sight. It's open Monday through Saturday, closed Sundays, and it's the kind of small, unassuming spot that outranks every chain and big-name restaurant in the city on pure word of mouth.

If you care about where your tax dollars go, tonight is worth paying attention to. Homestead is holding its first public budget hearing, part of the process that determines how much the city collects and where that money goes in the coming year.

For residents, this eventually shows up in the things you actually notice around town, including public safety, parks, roads, infrastructure and city projects.

The Scoop: You don't need to understand a 200-page budget to have an opinion about how Homestead spends money. Tonight is one of the opportunities residents have to listen, ask questions and speak up before the budget is finalized.

There has been an important development in a Homestead shooting we previously mentioned. Authorities say a Florida City man has been arrested and charged in connection with the August 18 killing outside Valentine's Market on SW Sixth Avenue.

Police originally responded after a ShotSpotter alert detected 11 rounds. Investigators say the victim was found outside the market with multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office announced the arrest on September 3.
