If you or someone in your family is flying through Miami International today, check your flight before making the drive north. An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane operated by 21 Air overran a runway while landing Sunday afternoon, striking vehicles and killing at least five people while injuring five others. The crash temporarily halted airport operations and caused widespread cancellations and delays during an already busy Labor Day travel weekend, and while two of MIA's four runways had reopened by Sunday evening, the NTSB investigation and travel disruptions are continuing.

The Scoop: More than 160 flights were canceled and hundreds delayed following the crash, so don't assume your flight is operating normally just because you haven't received a cancellation notice. Check directly with your airline before leaving Homestead..

If you've been wondering when another food option will arrive along Krome Avenue, Amy La Chapina just took an important step toward opening its Downtown Homestead location at 1 S. Krome Avenue. The Guatemalan restaurant received its new state restaurant license on August 28, bringing it closer to serving dishes like pepián, tamales and churrasco-style plates from the new location.

The Scoop: We don't have an official opening date yet, so don't head over for lunch just yet. But with the restaurant license now in place, this Downtown opening appears to be getting much closer.

If you've been wondering what people are actually paying for homes around Homestead, the latest numbers give us a useful snapshot. Single-family homes that sold in August had a median sale price of $553,750, with 98 closed sales and a median 42 days on the market, down from 63 days a year earlier. There were 534 single-family homes listed for sale as of September 6, representing about 5.4 months of inventory, while condos and townhouses had a much larger 13.6 months of supply.

The Scoop: There isn't really one Homestead housing market right now. Buyers looking for condos and townhomes have considerably more inventory to choose from than people shopping for detached houses, which can mean very different negotiating conditions depending on what you're trying to buy.

The Homestead Soup Kitchen Has Served More Than 600,000 Meals Since 1983

The Homestead Soup Kitchen served its first meal on Thanksgiving Day in 1983, inspired by Martha Royan's vision of feeding anyone who needed help without asking questions. What started at the American Legion Hall on South Krome Avenue later moved to First Presbyterian Church before finding a permanent home, and more than four decades later the organization has served over 600,000 meals to elderly residents, unemployed people, migrants and others facing hardship throughout Homestead and Florida City. In 2024 alone, the organization says it served more than 48,000 meals.

The Scoop: On a holiday when many of us are thinking about cookouts and a day off, it's worth remembering organizations doing this work year-round. The Homestead Soup Kitchen says it needs about $7,000 every month to keep its doors open and accepts both volunteers and donations.

It’s Labor Day. Here’s What Changes Around Homestead Today.

Today is Labor Day, so expect a few changes before heading out. Miami-Dade County offices, courts and libraries are closed, while Metrobus and MetroConnect are operating on Sunday schedules and Metrorail and Metromover are using weekend schedules. One thing that isn't changing is trash pickup: Miami-Dade says garbage and recycling collection will operate normally today, with disposal facilities maintaining their regular hours. Most restaurants, grocery stores and retailers set their own holiday schedules, so check directly with the business before making a special trip.

A Different Path Into a Career Is Growing in South Dade

As South Dade continues adding businesses and residents, employers still need people with practical skills, and apprenticeships are one way local residents can get paid while learning a trade instead of assuming every good career has to begin with a four-year degree. For businesses, these programs can also create a pipeline of workers trained specifically for positions that can otherwise be difficult to fill.

The Scoop: More development doesn't automatically mean better opportunities for people who already live here. Connecting South Dade residents to the jobs being created around them is what turns growth into something the community can actually benefit from.
