Could Homestead Get Its Own Commercial Airport?
Miami-Dade is studying whether South Dade could eventually need another commercial airport, and Homestead is one of the options being considered as Miami International approaches its long-term capacity. The county is looking at expanding Miami Executive Airport, expanding Miami Homestead General Aviation Airport or potentially developing a new airport between the two. For Homestead, that could mean new jobs and investment, but also more traffic, development and infrastructure demands. Nothing has been approved yet and there’s no construction timeline, but if Homestead emerges as a serious option, this could have a major impact on how South Dade grows.

Amendment 3 Fight Heats Up as Miami-Dade Warns About Service Cuts
The property-tax debate we’ve been following is getting more concrete as Miami-Dade works through its next budget. County leaders and labor groups warn that Amendment 3 could leave local governments with substantially less property-tax revenue, with the county estimating a $385 million first-year revenue loss if it passes. Supporters argue homeowners need meaningful property-tax relief and governments should take a harder look at spending, but for Homestead residents, the bigger question is what reduced revenue could mean for transportation, parks, infrastructure and other local services people use every day.
The Scoop: Amendment 3 will be on the November 3 ballot and needs at least 60% voter approval to pass. Miami-Dade’s next budget hearing is September 17, so expect this debate to continue.
Homestead-Miami Speedway Isn't Just for Race Weekends
With NASCAR's Championship Weekend locked in for November, it's easy to forget Homestead-Miami Speedway is active well beyond race day. The track runs driving experiences year-round, including the Mario Andretti Racing Experience, where visitors can ride shotgun in a real stock car or get behind the wheel themselves. It's one of those Homestead attractions people drive right past on US 1 without realizing it's open to the public most of the year, not just during NASCAR season.

More Than 1,800 Pounds Recovered From Illegal Grow Operation Near Homestead
More than 1,800 pounds of illegally grown marijuana were recovered from a large grow operation near Homestead, according to police. Homestead Police Chief Alexander Rolle said the discovery was made Wednesday night at an undisclosed location outside the city limits, with Homestead Police and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Bureau working together on the operation. Video released by police showed dozens of plants inside what authorities described as a large-scale grow operation. Police had not publicly confirmed whether anyone was taken into custody in the initial reporting, so we’ll be watching for updates on arrests, charges and where the operation was located.
