What This Day is All About

Long Labor Day Weekend Starts Tomorrow, Here's What to Know

Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7 this year, giving South Dade a three-day weekend to close out the unofficial end of summer. City offices, most banks, and the post office will be closed Monday, though trash and recycling pickup schedules can shift by a day depending on your route, worth double-checking with the city if your collection day normally falls on a Monday or later in the week. Restaurants and most retail stay open as usual, and it's typically a busy weekend for Homestead-Miami Speedway and Redland Market Village, so expect more traffic than a normal weekend if you're headed that way.

Meet the Man Leading Homestead's Police Department
Mario Knapp has been running Homestead's Police Department since he was sworn in as Chief earlier this year, with city and county leaders and longtime community figures turning out for the occasion. Mayor Steven Losner said at the time he's counting on Knapp to take the department "to the next level." With Labor Day weekend about to bring more visitors and more traffic through town, it's worth knowing who's actually steering public safety around here. Read More

Homestead Bayfront Park Is South Dade's Best-Kept Waterfront Secret

Homestead Bayfront Park, part of Biscayne National Park, gives South Dade something most people don't associate with the area: real waterfront access. The park has a protected saltwater swimming lagoon, a boat ramp into Biscayne Bay, and the Herbert Hoover Marina, home to charter fishing boats and the newly opened La Playa Grill covered in a past issue. With Labor Day weekend bringing more people outdoors, it's worth remembering this is here, a legitimate beach-and-boating spot without the drive up to Miami Beach.

Florida's License-Plate Camera Crackdown Could Reach South Dade

Florida is ordering local law enforcement agencies to remove automated license-plate readers located on state highway rights-of-way, part of a growing debate over privacy and police surveillance.
The cameras automatically photograph license plates and can alert police when a vehicle connected to an investigation passes one. Supporters say they're valuable crime-solving tools, while critics argue the massive databases they create can be misused.
The decision matters locally because law enforcement agencies throughout Miami-Dade use automated plate readers. Several Miami-Dade mayors are already pushing back against the state's decision, while County Commissioners Danielle Cohen Higgins and Rene Garcia have expressed support for the privacy concerns behind the move.
For South Dade drivers, the practical question now is which cameras will have to come down and whether local agencies move them from state roads to locally controlled streets.
