Coconuts Grow in the Redland, and That’s More Unusual Than You Think
World Coconut Day is a good reminder that South Dade grows more than mangoes and avocados. The Redland’s subtropical climate is warm enough for coconut palms to produce fruit, giving our agricultural district another tropical crop most people rarely associate with local farming.
While most coconuts found in U.S. grocery stores are imported, coconuts grown right here in the Redland are a small but pretty cool part of South Dade’s agricultural story, alongside the lychees, mangoes and avocados the area is better known for.
It's Been a Rough Start to the Season for Homestead High Football
It hasn't been an easy few weeks for Homestead Senior High's football team. The Broncos sit at 1-2 overall so far this season, though they're 1-0 in league play, real growing pains early, but a program still finding its footing where it counts. It's the kind of story that never makes headlines outside South Dade, but it matters plenty to the players grinding through it and the families showing up every Friday night to cheer them on anyway. Their next home game is worth circling on the calendar if you want to see how they respond.
Homestead Is Trying to Turn Its Spaceport Status Into an Actual Industry
Homestead Air Reserve Base’s Westover gate
Homestead Air Reserve Base picked up an official state spaceport designation back in 2024, and now city leaders are trying to actually make something out of it, real jobs, real investment, not just a title. Mayor Steven Losner says one company has already committed to setting up shop in the city's Park of Commerce, with at least one more circling county-owned property near the base.
The city's also trying to lure a university into the mix, so the local workforce is ready when those jobs show up. It's a long-game bet, no guarantee it pays off, but if it does, officials are calling it a potential "multigenerational" shift toward the kind of higher-paying, tech-focused jobs this area hasn't historically had much of.
