Seeing another named storm on the map can get your attention this time of year, but Tropical Storm Edouard is not headed toward South Florida.

As of the National Hurricane Center's early-morning update, Edouard was in the northwestern Gulf with 40 mph winds, moving west-northwest toward the Louisiana/Texas coast. Forecasters expected it to strengthen before reaching the coast later today.

For Homestead, that means no Edouard prep is needed right now.

Still, today is September 1, and we're moving into one of the busiest stretches of hurricane season. This is a good reminder to make sure your water, batteries, medications, pet supplies and other hurricane basics haven't quietly disappeared since you last checked them.

A Little More Green Is Coming to Downtown Homestead

If you've spent time around Losner Park lately, here's another downtown project worth knowing about.

Homestead's Community Redevelopment Agency has plans for Paseo Park at 37 W. Mowry Drive, where a vacant structure was demolished to make room for a new public green space.

The goal is simple: give downtown another place to gather, improve the walk between Mowry Drive and Losner Park, and make the area feel a little less like somewhere you only drive through.

One thing we're watching closely: the City's project information previously projected completion for May 2026. Since we're now in September, the useful question for residents is when will the finished space actually be ready to enjoy?

Here's one meeting that's more important than its government-sounding name makes it seem.

The Back Bay Study looks at ways Miami-Dade could reduce risks from coastal storms and flooding. Tonight, Homestead residents get a local opportunity to hear about the study and provide input.

The public meeting runs from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at William F. Dickinson Community Center, 1601 N. Krome Avenue. The City's calendar notes that one or more City Council members may also attend.

You don't have to be a policy expert to participate. If flooding, hurricane resilience or how South Dade prepares for future storms matters to you, this is the kind of meeting where showing up actually makes sense.

If you haven't tried Mofongo Martes at Chefs on the Run, Tuesday might be the day.

The Downtown Homestead restaurant is offering several versions today, including chicken, habanero chicken, fried pork, jerk pork, plant-based and shrimp.

And these aren't just six different toppings on the same plate. There are options like the Pork Belly Chino Taino Mofongo with ginger aioli, Sriracha and wakame alongside more traditional versions.

The Tuesday menu is available from 11 AM to 3 PM, with featured mofongos currently starting at $18.
