Homestead families with girls ages 9 to 18 have a new free opportunity to help them build confidence, make connections, and grow in a supportive environment. Homestead’s Police Athletic League is kicking off its Pillow Talks mentoring program tonight, giving girls a space for real conversations, meaningful activities, sisterhood, and personal growth.

Best of all, the program is completely free. If you’ve been looking for something positive and empowering for your daughter to get involved in, this is worth checking out.

It's National Eat Outside Day, Here's Where South Dade Does It Best

If today's the day you actually take a meal outdoors instead of eating at your desk, South Dade has more patio options than people give it credit for. White Lion Cafe and Taste of Redland both lean into the area's farm-to-table character with outdoor seating that puts you right in the agricultural scenery. FarmHouse Miami and Milagros Farm take it a step further, dining that's genuinely surrounded by working farmland rather than just a patio bolted onto a parking lot. It's one of the small things that separates South Dade's food scene from the rest of Miami-Dade: you're rarely more than a few minutes from a place where the view is actually worth looking at.

JJ's Cuisine Smokehouse & Steakhouse has quickly become one of the most talked-about new restaurants in Homestead since opening earlier this year, and it's easy to see why: real Texas post oak wood, hours-long slow-smoked brisket, ribs, chicken, and sausage, plus a full steakhouse menu and a full bar. The vibe leans casual and lively, with live music and karaoke turning it into more of a hangout than a quick BBQ stop, and reviewers keep pointing to the gator bites and the housemade sauces as standouts.

One thing worth knowing before you go: JJ's is closed Mondays, so today isn't the day, but Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (later on Fridays and Saturdays), it's open and worth the trip whether you're passing through on the way to the Keys or just looking for something different than the usual Cuban and Caribbean spots.

Recent conversations at Miami Dade College’s Homestead Campus centered on apprenticeships, workforce training and helping employers find skilled talent right here in our community.

For residents, that could mean more opportunities to build a career without automatically heading north for work. Construction and the trades, manufacturing, aerospace and aviation, logistics, hospitality and tourism are among the industries that could benefit.

The goal is simple: train more people locally, hire more people locally and keep more economic opportunity in South Dade.
