South Florida Hospitals Would Absorb Most of Amendment 3’s Healthcare Impact
If Amendment 3 passes this November, South Florida hospitals could feel most of the financial hit. A new Florida Policy Institute analysis estimates that four South Florida public hospital systems would account for more than 70% of the $323 million Florida public hospitals could lose over three years.
That includes Miami-Dade’s Jackson Health System, which the report projects could lose about $63.7 million. Why should South Dade residents care? Less property-tax revenue could put additional pressure on the public healthcare system and the services local families depend on.
The Scoop: Nothing changes yet. Amendment 3 still needs at least 60% of the vote to pass in November. The proposal would increase the homestead exemption for certain local property taxes, but the report says it doesn’t provide a replacement for the hospital funding that could be lost.
Homestead Shoppers Are Being Warned About Card Skimmers
Before you insert or swipe your card on your next shopping trip, take a quick look at the card reader. The U.S. Secret Service and Homestead Police have been checking local businesses for card skimmers, devices criminals use to steal your credit or debit card information.
Surveillance footage from Homestead and West Miami showed just how quickly it can happen. Investigators say suspects used a pan to block employees’ view while someone tampered with a payment terminal. And it’s not just checkout counters. Gas pumps and businesses that accept EBT cards can also be targeted.
The Scoop: Give the card reader a quick check before you pay. If it looks loose, unusually bulky or different from the reader next to it, don’t use it and tell an employee. When available, tap-to-pay can also help you avoid inserting or swiping your card through a compromised reader.
