Homestead Isn’t a Small Town Anymore. Here’s the Proof.

Homestead was officially incorporated in 1913, and the city residents know today looks very different from the small agricultural community it once was. Homestead now spans more than 15 square miles and is home to tens of thousands of residents, with continued housing and development adding to that growth.
You can see the change without looking at a population chart. New subdivisions, apartment projects, restaurants, businesses and road improvements are appearing across the area, while longtime residents are watching once-familiar stretches of South Dade become increasingly developed.
The numbers simply put evidence behind something many locals already feel every day: Homestead is no longer a small town. That growth brings more businesses, restaurants and services closer to home, but it also puts more pressure on roads, schools, infrastructure and the character of the community as the city continues to expand.

Look Up Tonight: A Partial Lunar Eclipse Is Coming

You have a pretty good reason to step outside tonight. A partial lunar eclipse is expected to be visible from the Homestead area overnight Thursday into Friday, weather permitting.
Unlike a solar eclipse, you don’t need special eclipse glasses to watch a lunar eclipse. Find a spot with a reasonably open view of the night sky and take a look before bed or during the later stages overnight.
The best part is simple: it’s free, it’s happening right above South Dade, and you don’t have to drive north to enjoy it.
Homestead’s Nonprofit Network Runs Deeper Than Most Residents Realize

Photo was taken by Joe Raedle.
Homestead is home to a large network of nonprofit organizations working across causes that touch everyday life in South Dade, from food assistance and youth programs to education, churches, scholarships and community services.
Many of these organizations operate quietly, which means residents may benefit from their work without ever knowing the groups behind it. The size of the local nonprofit community is also a reminder that South Dade’s support network extends far beyond government programs and the handful of large charities most people recognize by name.
For residents, it’s worth knowing what organizations are operating close to home, whether you need assistance, want to volunteer or are looking for a local cause to support.

A Waterfront Sports Bar Gives Homestead a Different Kind of Night Out

Business Spotlight
If your usual Homestead dinner view is a parking lot, this one offers something different.
La Playa Grill Seafood & Bar is located inside Homestead Bayfront Park at Herbert Hoover Marina, combining seafood, drinks and sports-bar energy with actual waterfront surroundings. That gives locals another option when they want dinner or drinks without making the drive north toward Miami.
The setting is the biggest draw. Instead of another restaurant in a shopping center, you can head toward the bay for water and marina views, making it an easy option for a casual meal, birthday, get-together or simply changing up the usual dinner rotation.

Homestead’s Next Surplus Auction Opens Tomorrow

The City of Homestead’s next surplus auction gives residents and businesses a chance to bid on equipment and other non-real-estate property the City no longer needs.
For bargain hunters and small businesses, it’s worth checking the inventory once it goes live. You may find something useful before assuming government surplus has nothing for you.
