Why the Air Looks Hazy Near Homestead Today

If the sky around Homestead looks hazier than usual, there’s a reason.

Five wildfires remained active in Miami-Dade Monday, with moderate air quality reported in western areas near Homestead and Kendall. The largest, the Chipmunk fire, had burned more than 15,500 acres and was 50% contained.

For most people, moderate air quality is still acceptable, but anyone unusually sensitive to smoke or air pollution may want to limit prolonged or heavy outdoor activity if haze or smoke is noticeable.

The bottom line: that haze outside isn’t just another cloudy South Florida morning. Conditions can change quickly with the wind and firefighting progress, so keep an eye on it today. Shark Valley also reopened Monday afternoon after temporarily closing due to the fires.

Homestead Is the Front Door to Two National Parks, Here's Why That Matters Today

The National Park Service turns 110 today, and Homestead has plenty of reason to celebrate. Everglades National Park sits just west of us, while Biscayne National Park lies to the east, putting us between two completely different experiences: wetlands, sawgrass and wildlife on one side, Biscayne Bay, mangroves and coral reefs on the other.

That’s good for residents and local businesses. We have world-class outdoor experiences close enough for a day trip, while park visitors bring opportunities for local restaurants, hotels, tour operators and small businesses.

Even better, August 25 is an official NPS fee-free day for U.S. citizens and residents in honor of its 110th birthday. Other fees, reservations or activity charges may still apply, so check before heading out.

Florida City Is Giving Residents Free Metro Express Day Passes

If you have been curious about the South Dade TransitWay but have not tried it yet, Florida City is making that easier. Florida residents can stop by City Hall, complete a brief in-person survey and receive a free Metro Express Transit Day Pass while supplies last. The city says the offer is limited to one pass per resident.

That makes this more than a giveaway. It is a chance for South Dade commuters to test whether the express service could actually work for a workday, appointment or trip north without paying for the first ride. If you want one, do not wait too long because the city says supplies are limited.

Ice Dream & Co. Is Coming to Downtown Homestead

New Business Watch
Downtown Homestead could be getting a new dessert stop. Ice Dream & Co., an ice cream and candy shop, is planned for 51 N. Krome Avenue after the Homestead CRA approved a $55,000 grant to help transform the vacant space.

For Krome Avenue, that could mean another occupied storefront, family-friendly stop and reason to spend time downtown.

No opening date yet, but Ice Dream & Co. is officially one to watch.
