New Fencing Rules Take Effect in Parts of Homestead

Some Homestead residents will no longer be able to use wood or chain link fencing on their property. The City Council approved an ordinance prohibiting both fencing types within the Residential Traditional Neighborhood Development District and the Planned Urban Neighborhood district, part of a broader push to standardize the look of newer residential areas. Homeowners in those specific zoning districts should check with the city before replacing or installing fencing to avoid a costly redo.

Card Skimmers Found During Homestead Fraud Crackdown

Here’s one worth paying attention to before your next swipe. The U.S. Secret Service teamed up with Homestead Police and Hialeah Police for a major operation targeting card-skimming and EBT fraud. Authorities inspected 2,842 payment terminals, gas pumps and ATMs at 378 businesses across the Miami area and discovered 13 illegal skimming devices. The Secret Service estimates that removing the devices may have prevented roughly $13.5 million in potential fraud losses. Skimmers can secretly capture information from credit, debit and EBT cards when they're inserted into a compromised machine.
Before using a gas pump or ATM, take a few seconds to check it. Give the card reader a quick tug and avoid it if anything feels loose, crooked or unusual. Take a look at the keypad for anything that appears to be sitting on top of it, and use tap-to-pay when available. It's also a good idea to keep an eye on your accounts for small, unfamiliar charges, which can sometimes appear before larger fraudulent transactions. A two-second check before you pay could save you one giant headache later.
