It's Primary Election Day in Miami-Dade

Today is Election Day for Miami-Dade's August primary, and the rules are a little different than they were during early voting. Instead of showing up at any of the 23 countywide early voting sites, today's ballot has to be cast at your specific assigned precinct so if you're not sure where that is, it's worth checking before you head out, rather than guessing. Bring a government-issued photo ID with a signature, and keep in mind polls close at 7 p.m. sharp, with results typically starting to post not long after.
Beyond the party primaries, South Dade voters can expect several non-partisan races and local ballot questions that are open to every registered voter regardless of party affiliation, things like judicial retention races, School Board seats, and any county or municipal ballot measures on this cycle's slate. If a race doesn't have a candidate clearing 50% of the vote outright, it can head to a runoff later in the year, so today's results aren't always the final word. Voters with disabilities or accessibility needs can ask their precinct for curbside voting, and anyone who runs into a problem at their polling place can call the Miami-Dade Elections Department's voter hotline for help on the spot rather than leaving without casting a ballot.

MDC Homestead Campus Marks 36 Years Serving South Dade

Community Spotlight
Miami Dade College's Homestead Campus has come a long way since it opened back in September 1990. It started small, just six acres and one building in the heart of downtown, and today it's grown into an 18-acre hub serving close to 14,000 students a year. It's been through a lot to get there, too. Hurricane Andrew nearly wiped it out in 1992, taking more than half its enrollment with it, but the campus rebuilt and kept going.
These days you can study everything from nursing and business to the arts, and even aviation through the Eig-Watson School of Aviation. If you've got a kid (or you yourself) weighing college options without wanting to leave South Dade, this is probably the most accessible route to a degree right in your backyard.

Turnpike Proposes Redesign at US 1/Palm Drive After Crash Rates Triple the Norm

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise is designing changes at the US 1/Palm Drive interchange, a stretch connecting Florida City and Homestead that routinely backs up and, according to the agency's own numbers, sees crash rates three times higher than similar intersections statewide, with the broader corridor running at twice the typical rate.
The proposal on the table includes two-lane southbound exits at US 1 and Davis Parkway, a new bypass lane toward westbound Palm Drive, added turn lanes, smarter traffic-management tech between the US 1 and Campbell Drive interchanges, and a shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians along southbound US 1.
The agency is taking public comment now through an online exhibit room, and while feedback is accepted anytime, they're asking for meeting-related input by August 24 if you want it factored into this round. Design work is expected to wrap in 2027, with construction targeted for early 2028, though both dates could shift.
📅 Comment deadline: Monday, August 24, 2026
📍 Location: US 1/Palm Drive interchange, Florida City and Homestead

Sizzle Into National Fajita Day at Two Homestead Favorites

Today is National Fajita Day, the annual celebration of the sizzling Tex-Mex classic that's become a staple on menus everywhere. While there's no big citywide promotion planned in Homestead this year, that's not a reason to skip the celebration. Two local favorites are ready to deliver the skillet-hot experience without you having to drive north for it.
Casita Tejas Mexican Restaurant, a family-owned downtown spot serving Tex-Mex since 1987, has sizzling fajitas built right into its menu, along with an iron skillet loaded with chips, refried beans, melted cheese, and fajita strips if you want to go all in. It's located right across from Losner Park and the Seminole Theater.
Just a few blocks away, La Cruzada Restaurant brings its own Guadalajara-style take on Mexican cantina fare, with a lively atmosphere and live music on weekends. It's a solid pick if you want fajitas with a bit more festive energy around you.
