Students Head Back to Class as M-DCPS Opens the 2026–27 School Year

Miami-Dade County Public Schools students returned to class today for the start of the 2026–27 school year. This is also the first year most students won't have automatic free breakfast and lunch — families who haven't already applied for meal benefits should do so as soon as possible to avoid a lapse in coverage.

Turnpike/US-1 Interchange Project Meeting Tonight

County officials will present the latest plans for the Florida’s Turnpike/US-1 interchange project at a public meeting tonight, giving South Dade residents a chance to get a closer look at what’s being proposed before the project moves further along.

The interchange is a major gateway for drivers traveling between Homestead, Florida City, the Upper Keys, and communities throughout South Dade, so changes here could have a real impact on daily commutes and traffic patterns. Residents can attend to review current design updates, learn what changes are being considered, hear about the project timeline, and ask questions directly about the plans.

If you regularly use US-1 or the Turnpike, this is one meeting worth paying attention to. Transportation projects of this size can shape how South Dade moves for years, and tonight is an opportunity to see the plans and speak up while the project is still being discussed.

VFW Post 4127 Opens Its Weekly Steak Night to the Community

Thursday night can mean steak night in Homestead. VFW Post 4127 hosts a weekly Steak Night that is open to the public, giving local residents a chance to enjoy dinner while spending an evening at one of the area's longtime veterans organizations.

Known as “The Friendly Post,” VFW Post 4127 serves veterans and families from Homestead, the Upper Keys, and surrounding South Florida communities. Events like Steak Night also give residents who aren't veterans an easy way to visit the post, meet people in the community, and support an organization dedicated to local veterans.

If you've never been to the VFW before, this is a good excuse to stop by and see what the post is all about. Come hungry, bring a friend or family member, and make it a local Thursday night out.
