A brother-and-sister team in Homestead is turning a shared love of sweets into a growing small business built around creative desserts and healthier alternatives. Aaden, 14, and Addi, 12, are the young entrepreneurs behind a line of protein puddings and other treats served from the Juice Café in Oasis Plaza. Their creations feature fresh fruit, granola, nuts, mini cakes, bubble waffles, and other sweet combinations.

With support from their mother, Latoya Banks, the siblings developed the recipes themselves and already have ambitions well beyond Homestead, with hopes of growing their brand nationwide within the next five years. Their family’s commitment to young people also extends into the community through REACH BACC, which helps youth develop financial literacy skills and learn lessons that can prepare them for entrepreneurship and adulthood.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the county's Animal Services Department will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, August 11, at 10 a.m. for the new South Dade Pet Adoption and Protection Center, a $25 million, 30,000-square-foot facility expected to expand access to animal care, veterinary services, and adoptions across South Miami-Dade. Separately, crews have begun mobilizing along Krome Avenue for the ongoing Water and Sewer Upgrades Project, running from SW 328th Street/Lucy Street to the Miami-Dade County Busway. One lane in each direction remains open, but bicycle lanes in the project area are closed, with cyclists sharing the road under new shared-lane markings.

What started as a small back-to-school effort serving about 80 children has grown into a community event supporting hundreds of local families. This year, the Homestead Cares Foundation’s third annual back-to-school drive provided free school supplies to more than 430 children on Saturday, August 1, up from roughly 250 children in its second year.

Around 24 volunteers, including Homestead Health employees and their families, helped organize the event and distribute supplies to local students. The growing turnout highlights the financial pressure many families face as a new school year approaches, particularly as the cost of backpacks, notebooks, uniforms, and other classroom essentials adds up.

By providing many of those necessities at no cost, the annual drive helps students head back to the classroom prepared while giving parents some relief from back-to-school expenses. Its growth from about 80 children in the first year to more than 430 this year shows how quickly the effort has expanded to meet the needs of local families.

D.R. Horton Land Bank Buys 232 Homesites in Florida City for $28.5M

Florida City could be getting hundreds of new homes as one of the nation’s largest homebuilders positions itself for more growth in the area. A land bank working with D.R. Horton purchased 40 acres at the southwest corner of Redland Road and SW 336th Street for $28.5 million, with plans for 232 homesites.

The deal gives D.R. Horton access to land for future development while allowing the company to keep more of its cash available for other projects. No construction timeline has been announced, but for residents, the purchase is another sign that significant single-family housing growth could be coming to Florida City.
