What Today (Saturday, Aug. 8) Is All About

Free School Lunch Is Changing for Most Students — Here's What Families Need to Know

Miami-Dade County Public Schools will no longer offer free breakfast and lunch to every student districtwide starting this school year. After four years of universal free meals funded through a federal program (Community Eligibility Provision), updated federal eligibility data means only 121 M-DCPS schools still qualify for the free program. Families at schools that don't qualify will need to apply for free or reduced-price meals. For students who don't qualify, breakfast costs $2.50 and lunch $4.20 (reduced price: 30 cents and 40 cents). The meal application opens Monday, August 10 at mdcpsnutrition.net — with the first day of school just three days later.

📅 Key dates: Application opens Aug. 10 | School starts Aug. 13

Amendment 3 Property Tax Debate Intensifies Ahead of November Ballot

Florida homeowners could see a major reduction in their property tax bill if voters approve a proposed constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot. The measure would gradually increase the homestead exemption for non-school taxes from the current $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. Supporters say it would make homeownership more affordable, while critics warn it could reduce funding for local services like police, parks, and road maintenance. If you own a home or plan to buy one, this is a proposal worth keeping an eye on before Election Day.
