On This Day in South Dade History
August 7 marks the anniversary of the 1840 attack on Indian Key during the Second Seminole War. The raid, led by Seminole Chief Chekika, claimed the life of botanist Dr. Henry Perrine, whose dream of introducing tropical crops to South Florida helped shape the agricultural future of today's Redland. The attack unfolded during a wider conflict over the forced removal of the Seminoles from their homeland, making it one of the most significant and complex events in South Florida's early history.

For more than 40 years, the Homestead Soup Kitchen has been a steady source of help for residents across Homestead, Florida City and South Dade. The organization recently transitioned to new leadership, and it's still serving the community. It is worth a mention for anyone looking to volunteer or donate locally.

Midtown Homestead Bringing Miller's Ale House, Bonefish Grill, Carrabba's, and Shake Shack
Homestead's dining scene is set for a major expansion. The Midtown Homestead development near Campbell Drive and the Florida Turnpike is moving forward with plans for Miller's Ale House, Bonefish Grill, Carrabba's Italian Grill, and Shake Shack, along with a fifth restaurant that has not yet been announced. The project will also add retail space and 354 apartments, making it one of the city's biggest mixed-use developments in recent years.

Tuga Portuguese Cuisine Opens Inside American Heritage Market
A new Portuguese restaurant, Tuga Portuguese Cuisine, has opened inside American Heritage Market, bringing dishes like polvo à lagareiro (grilled octopus) and a solid Vinho Verde list to the local dining scene. It’s a nice change of pace from the usual Cuban and Latin spots that dominate Homestead's food scene.
