Bluegill Fire in the Everglades Now 75% Contained

Firefighters have made major progress on the Bluegill Fire burning in Everglades National Park, roughly nine miles east of Shark Valley near U.S. 41. The blaze has grown to about 815 acres but is now about three-quarters contained, with fire behavior easing since the initial outbreak. No evacuation orders are in place, though smoke may still reduce visibility along Tamiami Trail, and drivers are urged to stay alert for changing conditions.

Miami-Dade Schools Open Next Week

Miami-Dade County Public Schools begin the 2026–27 school year on Thursday, August 13. Families still needing supplies should check community resource fairs and back-to-school drives happening around Homestead and Florida City in the coming days.

Two Public Meetings Shape Homestead's Future This Week

The City of Homestead is hosting back-to-back community input sessions: a first public workshop on reimagining Harris Field Park on August 10, and a Turnpike/US-1 interchange project meeting on August 13. Both are open to residents who want a say in how the projects move forward.

CRA Grants Fuel Small-Business Storefront Upgrades Downtown

The Homestead CRA Board approved a $25,000 grant to Shafiya & Rahima Corporation, a local downtown grocery store, to fund exterior and property improvements. A separate CRA-backed venture, combining tattoo services, vintage retail, and an art gallery is also preparing to open downtown, adding to the district's cultural and commercial mix.
