Homestead budget survey asks residents what should come first

The City of Homestead is asking residents to complete a Community Budget Survey tied to its Five-Year Strategic Plan. The city says it wants feedback on service priorities, neighborhood needs, and future investments. This is the kind of civic item that can sound boring until budget season turns into real decisions about streets, parks, public safety, events, utilities, and customer service. For residents, small-business owners, parents, seniors, and neighborhood groups, the survey is a low-friction way to put local priorities on the record before spending choices harden. The best use of this story is not just “take the survey.” It is “talk to your block, your customers, and your family first, then take the survey with specific examples.”

Florida City commission meets Tuesday night

Florida City’s next regular City Commission meeting is set for Tuesday, July 14, at 6:30 PM in the City Commission Chambers. The city notice says the meeting will be led by Mayor Charlotte Thompson, Vice Mayor Ronda Ferguson Cobb, and Commissioners James Gold, Richard Brown Jr., and Trina Wilborn. Residents who want agenda materials or need ADA accommodations are directed to contact City Clerk Jennifer A. Evelyn in advance. This matters because Florida City has several active civic threads right now, including infrastructure notices, floodplain-related public comment, and the return of regular agenda-review procedures. For residents and businesses, the next two weeks are a good time to watch what moves from public notice into commission action.

Sunstone proposal puts west Homestead growth back in view

Florida YIMBY reports that Abreu Development has proposed Sunstone, a mixed-use project west of Southwest 137th Avenue in Homestead. The reported site is about 20.2 acres, currently agricultural, and was purchased by the firm for a combined $9.5 million in January. The Homestead Development Review Committee was expected to review the proposal on June 23. Details are still at the proposal and review stage, so this is one to track rather than treat as settled. Still, the signal is clear: west Homestead land-use pressure is active. Readers should watch for unit counts, commercial square footage, traffic impacts, school capacity, stormwater planning, and whether any project design actually creates useful neighborhood-serving retail.

Homestead Middle teacher earns districtwide Rookie Teacher of the Year

Miami-Dade County Public Schools named Kristian Jose Luciano, a social studies teacher at Homestead Middle School, the district’s 2027 Rookie Teacher of the Year. M-DCPS says Luciano teaches 7th and 8th grade, chairs the Social Studies Department, sponsors the National Junior Honor Society chapter, and serves as a Volunteer Guardian ad Litem. The district also points to a 14-percentage-point increase in the 2025 Civics EOC under his leadership. This is exactly the kind of good news South Dade should pause for. A strong civics teacher does more than lift test scores. He helps students understand rights, responsibilities, government, service, and how to use their voice before adulthood.

Seminole Theatre Voices gives local singers a summer runway

Seminole Theatre lists Seminole Theatre Voices running June 29 through July 29 at its downtown Homestead auditorium. The program is pitched to singers who are just starting out or trying to improve, with training in healthy vocal technique, performance ability, and confidence. This is a useful local arts story because it is not only about attending a show. It is about building talent here. Downtown Homestead benefits when the theatre is both a stage and a classroom. Students, adults, choir members, karaoke regulars, and performers who want a more formal training path should know this exists.

Date: June 29 to July 29, 2026
Time: Program schedule through Seminole Theatre
Location: Seminole Theatre, 18 N. Krome Ave, Homestead
